Who played in 2014
The Plaza season this year got off to a slow start due to poor weather causing the much loved Hayling
for St George event on 27th April to be rescheduled for 3rd August, however the Red Cross braved the
wind while the sun shone on the 11th May bringing the "The Wight Diamonds Marching Band” which
was formed in the year 2000 as a community based military-style marching band. In recent years they
have extended their repertoire so that they can give band concerts in addition to their traditional
marching events
One of the aims of Wight Diamonds is to make music fun for everybody – those playing and those
listening and those watching!
We are delighted to be performing in Hayling Island as a culmination of a weekend away at the
Kingston Borough Bands Tattoo. This is a biennial event involving a number of marching bands at
which we first performed in 2012.
Based in Newport, Isle of Wight, the Wight Diamonds membership spreads over a lot of the island and
the band’s 30 or so engagements every season include most of the island’s carnivals and fetes and
shows, mainland carnivals as well
as concerts and formal parades
such as Remembrance Sunday.
We encourage anybody who has an
interest in marching bands to join
our happy band and we are happy
to develop players from complete
beginners. Our youngest player
performing this year is only five
years old and she plays alongside
her aunt and grandmother. They
form part of our family – “The Wight
Diamonds Marching Band” and
encompass our motto “Music with
Friendship”
You may even see them at the 999
day on Hayling.
