A touch of ‘Scrumpy and Western’ was the order of the day at Eastoke Corner on Sunday 27 July, as the ‘Mangledwurzles’ took to the stage on yet again a scorcher of a day, for the latest in the Hayling’s BEST ‘Playing on the Plaza’ free live music events.
Classic West Country anthems celebrating cider drinking, combine harvesters and err............ more cider drinking, was well to the fore as the free concert on Eastoke’s new ‘liveability plaza’, marked the start of a whole fortnight of contryside fun at the 2008 Hayling Scarecrow Festival.More than just a Wurzels tribute band, The Mangledwurzels played Wurzels songs, old and new, blended with a selection of self-penned titles and pop standards 'Mangled' in true Wurzels tradition. Again the Hayling sun shone down on a packed plaza, many locals and tourists alike came streaming down to listen to the sounds of The Mangledwurzels. After an initial issue when Hedge arrived on site complete with bird of prey in the foot well of his car. He had picked the poor bird up after it had been hit by the car in front. Shortly after his arrival the bird decided to take hold of Hedges hand in a vice like grip which took several minutes to release The plaza team took this in their stride and it wasn’t long before the local bird sanctuary was informed and they came to our rescue. The rest of the afternoon went fantastically with many foot tapping sounds emanating from the Mangledwurzels, below is a slide show of the event.
